Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Cencorship at the Internet Archive

Reading yet another post bashing Donna Godchaux and Vince Welnik or how “washed up” Bob Weir is makes one realize how unfortunate it is that IA has chosen to censor (silence) some of the so-called “off-topic” ? subject matter.

IA is a community of some like-minded folks with many similar life experiences.

We all know the Grateful Dead and their musical contributions well. I enjoy the many conversations here regarding (not only music) but the discussions involving Art, Politics, Science, Technology, World Events etc. These conversations are often more interesting than waxing on rhapsodically as to the worst version of Ship of Fools ever performed.

To quote David Lemieux, the Grateful Dead have been extinct for 15 years now, though their legacies remain.

To many of us out here in Northern California, The Grateful Dead transcended music and pioneered a way of life encompassing, Art, Business, Culture, Environmentalism, Philanthropy, Political Activism, Sustainability, Technology, Vegetarianism etc. Therefore, discussions on these subject matters should pertain.

It's a sad day when moderators chose to delete any postings here at IA, for this is what Barlow and the EFF have been working so diligently towards our collective mutual benefit.

Music is an Art Form whose medium is sound. In many ways, talking about music misses the point, just like talking about food and sex.

Just drink it, just eat it, just listen to it, just love it!

Cencorship of foul, bigoted trolls is not censorship.

Them be the rules.

Agreed,

Prejudice, Discrimination, Hatred, Violence, Religious Extremism and Ignorance, are non socially redeeming values.

In regards to the IA terms of use wordy lawyer speak, can you give us the bullet points? cause reading that language makes my eyes dizzy.

And in terms of Wikileaks, i think the focus should be on the "Rat" within the Government who had access to and stole those files against his/her oath, not the media source that published them.

Brilliant deduction Rob. Perhaps if you would have used some of this logic you would not have run the Pub directly into the ground.

I agree generally. The Internet, generally is a public place. However, to add a little poop to your party, the Internet is also a big patchwork of private spaces, each with specific rules. This is a GD discussion board. There is a discussion board for everything under the sun on the net.

I'd hazard a guess that it was about one man's overweening and egotistical need to relentlessly impose his flawed world view on the rest of us.

I could be wrong, mind you.

Hmmm--did I miss something? Did one of my military history rants or movie "early is better" tirades find its way to the Forum Trash Bin?

Or is this just in ref to the "clean up" roughly 3 wks or so ago?

That wasn't censorship, in my view; that was cleaning up a mess, pure and simple. To put it in the context of the examples quoted above, if while reviewing a food establishment someone happened to get sick (literally), I see nothing wrong with cleaning it up before moving on with the matters at hand.

I will, however, refrain from translating this metaphor into one ref'ing sex, as it's likely to arouse Dire since in his world, dung, manure, and calls of nature, reproductive and otherwise, do not constitute a "mess" per se.

Apologies in advance if I missed a "deletion" of some significance...

Apropos of nothing but military history, I just read about Major Dick Winters' passing last week. The term "great american" was invented for people like him.

EDIT: This one's for you Rob, I could hear you teeth grinding from here

No significance - just some guy who posted the formula for bath tub cold fusion and unlimited renewable clean power generation.

And the formula for healthy Cap'n Crunch Crunchberries.

Seriously though, did we miss something other than the recent flushing?

Assuming this is a generally off-topic topic, I have a rant to contribute:

NEVER sign up for any Bally's Total Fitness gyms. The sales guy will lie through his teeth and give you a ridiculous contract. They have been sued repeatedly by multiple attorneys general, and been hit with both customer and investor class action suits but have not remedied their evil ways. Take it from me!

Is correcting the spelling of censorship in this thread a form of censorship itself?

To answer your next questions, yes there is an inch of ice on everything here and i am stuck at home and yes i am that bored.

There was a spelling error that didn't involve me? Astounding!

Gadzooks!

Hey L (and Sir Rob, and Dung Head Dire): good to see all three of you here and "active" as usual. And RLO, always a pleasure to find you've checked in, if only to keep the manure jokes from becoming so dominating that all I can think of is Dire, Bessie and my own doggies and their love for a steaming serving of meadow muffins (which are just this side of Heaven in their minds, if I may speak for the canine cranium and the small portion not dedicated to past, present and future belly rubs).

We had 4 inches of snow as well, and i have to say i would trade that inch of ice for 10 more inches of snow. The DOT's solution to the ice is to wait for the temperature to rise. I can shovel snow and have a 4WD truck but on this ice that just means i have 4 spinning wheels!!

Good luck with the snow tonight. Stay off the roads and hopefully no one will lose power.
